Chapter 16
Iâm not especially quick on my feet when Iâm in a new town, super early in the morning, and looking for I donât even know what. âI felt the need to come here. Iâm not sure why. My intuition, I guessâ¦â
He wasnât sure he bought my explanation. Het held his tongue before shooting off the first thing out of his mouth. I think. Though, it didnât take long for his true personality to shine through. The insinuation in his tone didnât do him any favors. âDonât tell me youâre one of those manifestation junkies. All mindset and no solid, hard data? Oh, please.â
My blood boiled. I snarled at him. âFirst off, thatâs extremely offensive to those who trust their instincts or believe strongly in manifesting good things in their lives. Secondly, no, it has nothing to do with that. Iâm a witch, and I was sent here.â
âA witch? Did you just say youâre a witch?â He took a step back and cocked his head to the side, almost like he was evaluating me for the first time.
I groaned. Come on, he worked with June. He had to knowâoh, boy. She kept a low profile, so low, it could be buried six feet under. My words spilled out so quickly, I didnât have time to reel them back in. The glint in his eye told me he didnât know. At all.
The queasiness hit me first. I slid my hand over my stomach and closed my eyes. Deep breath. Breathe, girl. Yes, June is going to be beyond angry, but push that aside for the moment. Youâre here for a reason.
He repeated the words, quieter. âYouâre a witch?â
I snapped back at him. âAnd youâre a scientist.â
âYes, I am.â
âTell me, Mr. Scientist, do people like you believe in witches?â
He didnât answer. âWhy did you feel the need to come here?â
This was not a conversation I looked forward to. âYou obviously heard about the murder that took placeâJohn Farmer. It was all over the news. I guess I wondered if it could have happened elsewhere, but the body was moved. I donât know. Itâs silly, or maybe I was hoping to find something to point me in the right direction.â
âLike what? Why?â
âIâm trying to help a friend. Thatâs enough of twenty questions, okay. Turns out I made a mistake. I need to head back to my café. Letâs pretend you didnât see me. We donât need to talk or be friends. Just do me a favor, donât mention this to June. Sheâs sensitive about this kind of stuff. Can you at least do that?â
He hesitated, then nodded. âIs sheâ?
I looked away. âItâs not my place to talk about. Why? Are the two of youââ
âWhoa, work colleagues. Weâre not like that.â
âOkay, well have the courtesy to keep this knowledge out of her workplace. She prefers it that way.â
âObviously.â
I was in deep trouble with June. That I knew for sure. What I still didnât know was why Iâd been sent to Otter Lake in the first place.
